Man vs Food Episode 16 Location: Denver, CO Challenge Results: Man Loses Have you ever had one of those mornings where you woke up and thought, "I think I'll have breakfast for 14 today...", yeah, me neither. However, this sort of mentality has become the norm on Man vs Food. For instance, in episode 16 Richman takes us to Jack n Grill in Denver, Colorado, for their mile high 7 pound breakfast burrito challenge...
Duffys Cherry CricketIf Adam takes time to include a burger joint while touring a city, you know it has to be exceptional. Duffys Cherry Cricket is such a place, offering 100% lean Angus burgers with over 20 topping choices to satisfy the burger lover in anyone. The business was born in 1948 in the owners living room, and has grown in to one of the local hot spots of Denver. In a city known for its beef the burgers at Duffys Cherry Cricket have been voted #1. I'd say that's substantial. The true success behind this place has been in giving burger topping control back to the patrons ordering them. Any combination of flavors are available, making every burger they sell unique to the person ordering it. Duffys Cherry Cricket also has some exotic burgers I'd never heard of before like 'The Goober Burger'. Made with a large dollop of melted peanut butter and a fried egg (over easy). If you're having trouble picking from the topping choices, you can head over to the dart alley. That's right, a dart board with every topping listed. Your waitress will even throw the darts for you if you'd like. You can let fate pick your flavors but, only at Duffys Cherry Cricket.
Buckhorn Exchange DenverWhen you come to the Buckhorn Exchange, you not only get great food but also a glimpse in to the city's history by dining in Denver's Original Steakhouse. When you grab a menu here you're going to find a lot more 4 legged choices than beef. This is mountain man country and they've learned how to make all of it melt in your mouth. This is my kind of place! The Buckhorn Exchange opened in 1893 and offers up enough members of the wild kingdom to make Marlin Perkins shake in his boots. For instance, available to your specifications are Rattlesnake, Rocky Mountain Oysters (bull testicles), Quail, Elk, Buffalo, Ostrich and so on. My bet is that if they don't have it somebody's going to grab a gun and be right back... According to The Buckhorn Exchange Owner, Bill Dutton, the food here is still authentic to the era in which the restaurant was established. The Elk, Buffalo and Quail for instance, were the sort of thing that mountain men were use to eating, and what they preferred. Also part of the history of Buckhorn Exchange were patrons Teddy Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill. With his curiosity peaked, Adam heads back to the kitchen to see how they prepare all this authentic game. Executive Chef at the Buckhorn Exchange is Cesar Garcia. The primary method used in cooking any of these carnivore choices, he explains, is open flame grilling. This is done primary to preserve their traditions but, it's hard to beat the Smokey flavor of cowboy campfire style cooking. Adam jumps in and tries the Buffalo Tenderloin first, then Ostrich and Elk with a cherry cabernet and with each one it appears to get better. A definite stop when in Denver.
Jack n Grill Denver
When Adam first saw this thing I bet he wanted to slap his producer. Just looking at it made me shake my head. There is no way a normal human being can consume the Jack n Grill 7 pound burrito. My daughter weighed 7 pounds at birth, and I'm sure my wife appreciated that change taking place slowly. Which begs the question, how does a man prepare to carry the equivalent of an infant in his stomach? Kids, don't try this at home... For Adam the answer is easy. Host 15 prior gut busting episodes of Man vs Food, and your stomach will be a might bit stretched out too. Even then I'm not sure if that's good enough once I saw what went in the Jack n Grill 7 pound burrito. In a word, POTATOES. They use 7 of them and they're all softball size, with 12 Jumbo eggs, 1 pound of ham, cheeses and salsa oh my! Adam takes a seat with the buffalo baby burrito, and prepares for the Jack n Grill 7 pound burrito challenge to begin. The crowd in there was fired up! One man wearing a homemade Man vs Food t-shirt had ordered the breakfast behemoth, but couldn't quite get half way through it. He warns Adam that it comes very hot, so don't start until it cools a bit. Taking the advice of his fellow warrior to heart, Richman cuts the burrito lengthwise to release the steam and speed the cooling process. Once ready, he powers down on it like the animal we've come to know and love dealing a severe blow to the defending champion over the first 15 minutes. Adam's pace slows and his cheering fans grow concerned. Adam decides to change gears before the weight of the potatoes in his stomach registers with his brain so, he orders up a giant spoon from the kitchen. Taking bigger bites now he claws at the plate, trying to find the bottom, somewhere, please, help me God. Slowly, the Jack n Grill 7 pound burrito gets back to its feet, and knocks Adam out!
